The Great Shape Band exists to help young musicians become better at their instrument, learn how to play with other people, and discover that music can be used for something bigger than themselves.

Once a week, we come together to rehearse for Songs in the Key of Life, work on our original music, and become a real band.

We provide the rehearsal space, equipment, arrangements, music sheets, technology, guidance, and a place to perform.

But we cannot do the practicing for you.

The rehearsal is where we put the band together.
The learning happens before you arrive.

Your Part

If you want to be part of The Great Shape Band, you have to come prepared.

That means learning the songs at home. Use the Rocksmith Method. Study the original songs with the music sheets and chord charts. Take private lessons when possible. Join your school band, orchestra, chorus, or music program.

Use every opportunity you have to become better.

You don’t have to be the best musician in the room.

But you do have to be serious about becoming better.

Practice your instrument. Learn your part. Show up. Listen to the other musicians. Make mistakes. Fix them. Try again.

That’s how a band gets good.

Rehearsal Is Not a Music Lesson

This is important.

Our weekly rehearsal is not where you come to learn your part for the first time.

You should already know the basic chords, notes, lyrics, structure, or rhythm before rehearsal.

Rehearsal is where your part meets everybody else’s part.

Practice is something you do alone.
Rehearsal is something we do together.

That’s the difference between taking music lessons and being in a band.

Singers Have Homework Too

If you’re singing a song, don’t just memorize the words.

Know what you’re singing about.

Ask why the song was chosen.

What is the story?
What does it say about fear, pain, hope, poverty, faith, loneliness, love, injustice, grace or life?

When you understand the song, you sing it differently.

That’s especially important for Songs in the Key of Life. We don’t choose songs just because they sound good.

The songs have something to say.

This Really Is Your Band

The Great Shape Band isn’t a band you’re watching from the outside.

It’s yours.

That means you help shape what it becomes.

Bring ideas. Suggest songs. Write music. Help another musician. Invite a friend who loves music. Bring someone who plays drums, guitar, bass, piano, strings, brass—or someone who can really sing.

We’re building a community of young musicians who want to become great at what they do and then do something good with it.

Parents: You Are Part of the Band Too

The musicians cannot build this by themselves.

Parents are a huge part of whether this works.

Your job isn’t to make your child a great musician. Your job is to help create the conditions where they can become one.

Help them get to rehearsal consistently. Encourage regular practice. Help them find lessons. Encourage them to participate in their school music program. Ask them what song they’re working on. Ask whether they’re prepared for Saturday.

And most importantly, help them understand that commitment matters.

There will be weeks when they don’t feel like practicing.

That’s part of learning anything difficult.

Talent can get someone started.

Consistency is what makes a musician.

What We Promise

We’ll provide a place where young musicians can actually use what they’re learning.

We’ll provide guidance, rehearsal infrastructure, songs, arrangements, original music, charts and learning resources.

We’ll put beginners beside stronger musicians and give everyone something meaningful to contribute.

We’ll challenge them.

We’ll let them make mistakes.

We’ll expect them to improve.

And we’ll work toward something real:

a stage, an audience and a purpose.

Songs in the Key of Life

All of this leads somewhere.

Every year, The Great Shape Band prepares for our benefit concert, Songs in the Key of Life.

That’s where months of lessons, practice and rehearsals become a real performance.

But the concert isn’t only about showing people how well we can play.

The music raises awareness and support for children facing poverty, violence and illiteracy in Brazil.

That’s why our musicians need to understand something from the beginning:

You aren’t just learning songs.

You’re learning how to use what you’ve been given.

And someday another kid may be sitting in school, eating a meal, holding an instrument, or imagining a different future because a group of young musicians decided their music could matter.

The Deal

We’ll provide the place.

We’ll provide the guidance.

We’ll build the arrangements.

We’ll give you songs worth playing.

We’ll create opportunities to perform.

You bring the work.

Bring your instrument.

Learn your part.

Come prepared.

Help your bandmates.

Invite someone.

Understand the mission.

Then get on stage and play like it matters.

Because it does.
